Car is endangered...

The money situation is getting tighter and we're still living with my folks. The fiancee is wanting to trim expenses and keeps bringing up the car.

I drive Mom's truck, (which I hate, it drinks gas) so I'm not without transportation to and from work. But I don't want to think of either selling or trading the Acura right now. I'm just getting the car in shape and I know I'll never find one like this again.

I've spent less total than if I went and bought from a lot and made repairs. My credit is zilch and I have a pending Ch 7, so financing is out leaving me with getting an econobox for cash and letting go of the Acura.

Regardless of what I do, I'll be working on A car somehow, I know from experience. I'm not complaining about the work I've put into this car. I love it! I've never been able to work on a car this much before. I just don't want to have a deal-breaker on my hands!

I toyed with the idea of another car when I hydrolocked mine and screwed up the motor, but you'd be very hard pressed to find anything that would be more reliable for the cost of fixing whatever is wrong.

I just got my car back today (woohoo!) with a 60k JDM engine, all new seals, timing belt, clutch, mounts, etc for ~$1600 all in including labor. I could have bought a 4th gen accord or some other crap that would have been reliable but very very boring. Instead I ended up w/ a Legend that will last for another 10 years :).

First tell her to shut up!!! thats what i said to my girlfriend (of 7 years) when she was like when are you going to sell this car? i was like never!!! she was like... why not? you have had it since your were in high school. i told her, first theres nothing wrong with my car (just needed paint @ the time), 2nd to have all the stuff my cars has i would be spending at least 10k on a used car. and 3rd i would sell you before i sell my car!!! :). fastforward to now, my is painted i have the stereo i always wanted, with a bunch of other stuff. her friends like my car, she like my car, and every1 we meet likes it.

I maybe put around 4k into my car over the 7-8 years that i have had my legend. but im happy with it. if you think about it a newer car would cost more in taxes each year, insurence, and monthly payments. not sure what you need to do to the car, but just keep it. we here can help out with DIY and other info, and even parts since on the west cost there are alot of legends at the yards for parts.

That's what I'm trying to get across! I own the car outright and even with a faulty sensor, it still goes like a scalded cat and starts up just fine. Starter's prolly the most reliable thing on that car, lol! Before I fixed the fuel pump, it could sit there and crank happily all day if I let it :D

For $500 cash, I couldn't find anything else, so I'm sticking to that. Of course now that I do have the car, there's been several small cars for less than $1000. Saw an '86 Subaru GL 3dr not long ago.

I just don't want to let go of this coupe. It's too awesome!

EDIT: Not much needs to be done except fix the speedo cable. Maybe some rust that needs to be addressed, but that's it. This car was in 70% great shape when I bought it.

Wouldn't trade the Legend for anything, lol! Just mentioning how cheap cars always come around when I don't really have space for them, hehe!

Tell him **edit** this

My Landcruiser...4 years when got it...tags...$862, drank fuel like going outta style, $55 fillups. Parts every bit as expensive and it was Toyota...not the Lexus which even more.

My NEW civic..tags..$357, $34 fillups, good mileage but no real better than what I have now (this was a 02 Civic, I paid cash for the car so I was OTD at dealer...lil different story but still a shitload of $$ spent that day)

I could give a zillion examples of why keeping the legend is cheaper....

Gah, forgot to clarify; fiancee is a guy with a Chevy S-10 that we've been trying to keep from rusting out from under him.

Anyway, I got off the phone not long ago and may have gotten him to leave the car alone. *fingers crossed*

OP, your predicament reminds me of these...
-know when to hold 'em
-know when to fold 'em
-know when to walk away and know when to run

...though here's my personal view(s) of your current situation (I'll try to keep it short)

Your $$$ issue; living with your folks might be a good thing, we Filipinos traditionally wont let go of our children; especially MOM! And as would many parents do, they give it all they've got in supporting their children.

Fiancee budgeting your finances; you've got a winner there my friend  ...this will bring a good balance to your union, and one has to be a provider.

Lastly, MOM offered the truck for your transportation; again, as she should, as a parent... you're one lucky fella! I'd go with the flow for now, until you feel comfortable on your own.

I'm sure you will get all these sorted out, goodluck ;)

My Filipino pop was like " See ya, Go make money". :D

I just think getting another car is kind of a bad i dea because you never know what is wrong with it. You already know whats wrong with the legend, stick with that.

P.S

Filipinos FTW
