Question Power/torque loss after code 8 - help!

hi guys,
i own a 88 legend coupe, manual transmition. only 80000 kmt. Have some problems with acceleration in lower rpm. Engine check light came up, checked the ecu for blink codes. Found out that I have a code 8 failure. TDC Sensor is faulty. I bought a new distributor (aftermarket - brand:snap)
Car still runs poor. In the beginning it was only intermittent. But since 1 year it always runs poor. I also changed the ignition wires, fuel filter, airfilter, plugs (original parts) I checked the ignition coil, hoses for vakuum leaks, bypass solenoids, cat, exhaust. Everything above mentioned is o.k and within spec. I also had a code 15 (ignition output signal) which was cleared after replacing the distributor. But code 8 is still existing. What the hell can that be??

If it's still throwing a code 8, then it doesn't like your new distributor as the TDC sensor is part of the distributor. You might try removing the alternator sense fuse under the hood for a few seconds, just to ensure that you're not looking at an old code 8 that hasn't cleared.

thx for your reply! i already did reset the ecu. who knows where the cable from the tdc sensor goes to or ends? I mean the plug cables to the distributor and not in to the dstbtr.

Hey Lego!

My 89 FSM, which should be the same for your 88 coupe, I hope, says the connector on the distributor that's for TDC goes to the WHITE/BLUE and ORANGE/BLUE wires at the C305-C102 connector at the right (passenger) shock tower. One of those big connectors. It says that there should be 500-1000 ohms between the two wires. I would check this at the distributor and the connector on the shock tower first. Then the FSM says the two wires go to the C3 and C4 connectors at the ECU. You could splice and check there if you have to. If the ohms check good at all these points, it may be the ECU itself, according to the manual.

They would terminate at the ECU, though I'm not sure of exactly what harness it follows. The shop manual says that you should measure between 500-1000 ohms across the two terminals with the engine off. There should also be continuity to ground from each individual terminal. BTW, there's a downloadable factory shop manual posted under the FAQ thread, in case you're not aware and need to take it further.

It won't hurt to verify that your resistance readings at the end of the cable are okay, but my guess is that your parts supplier gave you a bad distributor. Good luck, and keep us posted...

hey, thats the same i thought and saw in my manual, but i could not identifiy really. I live in vienna and ordered the distributor in america. It is a snap distributor from partstrain. Before i bought a distributor from the junkyd and installed it. the engine check light as well as the blinking code DID NOT came up, BUT the poo r acceleration still exists. except this problem the legend is in nearly perfekt condition. don know what to do atm with it.

Vienna, as in Austria? Not sure what the parts availability is over there, but it does sound like the distributor you ordered was bad; the poor acceleration is likely a secondary issue. Do you still have the junkyard distributor that didn't throw any failure codes?
