is it true that Modern stereos do tend to run quite hot, but a short on the speaker wiring could cause this over heating problem and damage the stereo. best to get your speaker wiring checked out for shorts.

the only reason they get hot is when you use the amp within the HU, if you power your componets externally, it won't get very hot at all. any kind of short will damage a device.
