macLegend is on a distinguished road
Default beginning of a legend

Hello everyone, I am the proud new owner of a 86 sedan and was thrilled to find this dedicated community of legend lovers. I have been lurking around for the past week or so reading old threads and FAQs and learning all about this great car, so let me start by thanking all you that supply and maintain this information.
About Me: I am not a mechanic but I do have some passion for my cars and do most of my own maintenance with the help of my dad who has lots of experience (although mostly American cars and older stuff). I am much better with computers and wish cars had standards to make them more interchangeable :P I am also long winded so feel free to skim or skip the rest of this post. I want to get all this info down and I think i'll link this post in my sig so anyone who wants more info about me and my car can get it.

My Legend has a troubled past that I will try to summarize here. I know the last 3 owners of the vehicle, but nothing before that.
Owner A wrecked the car in 2001 (this shows up as a salvage record in a free nicb.org vincheck). He had repairs done and sold it to the next owner not too long after. I have lost touch with him so I cant ask him for details.
Owner B is a friend of mine but not much of a car guy, he doesnt have a lot of specifics for me. He said Owner A had the frame straightened on a machine and a new motor put in. I suspect this new motor was a junkyard or rebuilt motor. Everything looks like like factory under the hood, so whoever did it was good. Same V6 2.5L 24 valve that came stock. Owner B raved about how good of shape the motor was in and how powerful it was. He says the new motor has less than 100,000 miles on it but the car itself reads 185,000. He sold it to Owner C only because he found a newer Acura and Owner C needed wheels.
Owner C is my former roommate, and he lived with me for most of the time he owned the car. The only problem he had with it was when it overheated and blew a radiator hose. We replaced the hose and the thermostat and he drove it for a couple of weeks to work with no problem. He then parked it in favor of a car with working A/C .
It ended up sitting in my yard for almost 4 years before I talked him into selling it to me Heck he moved out a year ago.
The last 4 years have been hard on the car. The following is a list of all the things I can find wrong with the car so far. Not asking for troubleshooting in the intro forum, ill probably be making new threads about individual problems as I tackle them.
  • Oil leaking out of both valve covers (side covers)
  • Overheating (seems fixed since bleeding the air out of the cooling system)
  • All lights flicker to Rpms but not at idle
  • occasional strange noises from alternator (hopefully some new brushes will solve both of those)
  • Possible vacuum leak (sounds like someone is deflating an air matress on top of the motor)
  • Outer tie rod ends (done and legal)
  • knocking or ticking on sharp left had turns (i have learned to associate this with cv joints or wheel bearings going out, passenger side cv boot is torn)
  • driver side door wont lock with power button or manually but using the key in the door works
  • passenger side window only goes up with its button but goes down with the drivers side button.
  • done! re soldered main relay
  • A/C is dead (would love to fix it but dont even know if its factory or the new stuff)
  • leaking windows (both the windshield and the rear glass are dripping, the back seat has bad water stains and the back floorboard is green) thinking about just going to town with some silicone or something in a caulk gun to try and seal it because the black seal is coming off all over the back and i dont want to take it out.
  • fixed!-Check engine light, oil light, battery light and turn signal indicators not working (re soldered the connections in the cluster)
  • glove box is broken shut!

I figure i can leave this here as a public history of what ive done to the car and scratch each item off as i fix it. I paid 700 for the car, it might have been too much with everything thats wrong with it, but as long as it doenst have a bad head gasket I am happy
