Default Brake Upgrade

Hey Everyone,

I have 17" wheels with a clearance of 15.2 inches diameter in the barrel.

I am looking at putting some 13" rotors with 4 piston calipers in there, which will require a custom bracket.

that said, the measurement from the top of the caliper to the other side of the rotor (diameter) is 13.9" (I also have these measurements in mm's)

*** Well it looks Like I've got space, now All I need is to fabricate the bracket and have a custom hat for my 12.6-13" rotor. I can have the rotor machined to whatever spec I need, 28-30mm thick.

Any recs for 1 piece calipers? Preferably 4 pot?

Im confused. You are saying the caliper fits over the rotor and the wheel will still fit on with clearance? The bracket does not extend past the caliper in any direction (that would affect wheel fitment), so it should work.

..If it doesn't fit, i think you should go with a drag chute, but then again, im more than a little eccentric..

Hmm. I am going to do some more measurement.

The caliper/rotor combo clears the Barrel by .53 inches on each side. I am unsure if it will clear the spoke part of the wheel. Well, I guess its time to start tearing apart stuff.

thanks for helping I'll see what I can find out with some more time/tools

Please, do a search for BBK or Big Brake Kit. There are several members here who have been working on affordable BBK for these cars. I dont really follow them, because there are many things i would upgrade before i put my $$ into brakes, but there has been some work done.

I have searched this site and the old legend.org archives, covering probably 10 different threads and at least 50 posts over the last 3 days. I can't seem to find much.

However, thanks for the help and I will continue to barrel through info and make more measurements so that I can ask a more precise question or, hopefully, find the answer.

Well, the only retail kit I can find is from fastbrakes, which uses willwood calipers. However, willwoods just seem like repainted or remanufactured calipers to me. Plus I'd like to have a 1 piece caliper if possible.

coleman racing makes rotors, so I think once I measure and get the right caliper to fit my 17" wheel, I'll put a 12.5 or 13" rotor in there.

Ideally I'd like a 4 piston caliper, with the biggest possible pistons of course, but again there may be clearance issues on the spoke side.

My friends porsche calipers almost fit, but not quite. Looks Like I'd have to put in some spacing and I don't want to put my wheels out any further than they are already.

You dont want 4 piston calipers with the biggest possible pistons! It's bad brake math. The car is only 3500lbs! More pistons= smaller size per piston. Why the beef with Wilwood?? Seriously. Especially with their new Superlite line, the prices, the piston options, pad compound options. You are making me sound like a real wilwood nut hugger!

I am not aware of their superlite line, I may check that out. but I just think, at least through what I have seen so far, they are way effin overpriced.
2 rotors, brake lines and 2 calipers (4 pot) are like 1500...that is for only the fronts! x2 and you are at 3grand quick. I don't want sliding/floating calipers..I want 4 piston. They don't necessarily have to be huge, but I do know I want 1 piece calipers. They are much more rigid and are sealed, which helps a lot when you take your ride to the track (which I will be doing in the future). I haven't run across any 1 piece willwoods yet. Plus since they are 2 piece and not sealed, they get a lot more shit in them.

I can have coleman racing make me rotors for 90-100 each and get an entire brake line kit for 170-ish..thats like 600 bucks for the whole car, minus the calipers and brackets. So if we talk about brake math, what I 'm seeing is willwood is way overpriced lol

Wilwood sells a lot of different calipers, for price/performance i would look at the Forged Superlite or FSL calipers as they are fairly cheap at under $200. What size rotors can you get for the price range you listed?
